Evaluation of sleep apnea and sleep disorders - Dr. Karla Sanz

Common Signs of Sleep-Disordered Breathing

Evaluate your sleep symptoms during the night and day to identify potential airway obstruction:

Loud, Disruptive Snoring

Persistent snoring that disturbs your partner or can be heard through closed doors, often indicating airway resistance.

Witnessed Breathing Pauses

Moments during the night where you stop breathing for several seconds, followed by sudden gasps or choking sensations.

Unrefreshing Sleep & Fatigue

Waking up feeling exhausted despite sleeping normal hours, leading to severe daytime fatigue and lack of energy.

Morning Headaches & Dry Mouth

Waking up with a dull headache, dry throat, or sore mouth due to mouth breathing and low oxygen levels during the night.

Dr. Karla Sanz, ENT specialist in Guadalajara

Why Evaluate Snoring with an Otolaryngologist?

Snoring and apnea are not simple habits; they are mechanical and dynamic problems involving the anatomy of the upper airway. During the consultation, Dr. Karla Sanz examines key areas: the nasal structure (deviated septum, allergic rhinitis, or swollen turbinates) that blocks airflow, the throat and palate (floppy soft palate, long uvula, or flaccid tissues), and the tongue base and tonsils that narrow the throat during sleep.

As a specialist with a subspecialty in Sleep Medicine and Rhinology, Dr. Karla Sanz combines both clinical views. While a sleep study (polysomnography) measures the severity and frequency of your apneas during the night, the physical exam in the office locates the exact site or sites where physical airway obstruction occurs.

This comprehensive evaluation allows us to guide you toward the correct treatment path (such as CPAP, mandibular advancement devices, or functional surgery) to achieve safe results and restore your quality of rest.

Frequently asked questions about snoring and sleep apnea

Respuestas y aclaraciones sobre tu cirugía de nariz y valoración clínica.

Does loud snoring always mean I have sleep apnea?
Not necessarily. Some people snore (simple snoring) due to mild muscle vibrations without any airway blockage. However, if your snoring is very loud, interrupted by silences or gasps, or if you wake up choking or feeling tired during the day, a clinical evaluation is warranted to rule out sleep apnea.
How is sleep apnea definitively diagnosed?
The office clinical evaluation identifies anatomical risks and symptoms. The definitive diagnosis is made through a sleep study (nocturnal polysomnography or home respiratory polygraphy), which records oxygen levels, heart rate, and breathing pauses while you sleep.
What treatments are available for snoring and apnea?
It depends on the cause and severity. Options range from lifestyle changes (weight loss, side sleeping) and treating nasal obstruction (allergic rhinitis, deviated septum) to positive pressure devices (CPAP), mandibular advancement devices, or airway surgery in specific anatomical cases.
Does surgery cure sleep apnea?
Surgery is not a universal magic cure, but it can be highly effective in carefully selected patients who have clear anatomical blockages (such as large tonsils, a low-hanging palate, or severe nasal obstruction) or who cannot tolerate CPAP. Each case must be evaluated individually.
Can sleep apnea or lack of rest cause dizziness and instability?
Yes. Sleep fragmentation and low oxygen levels during the night cause extreme fatigue and chronic tiredness, which can present as instability, head heaviness, or dizziness upon standing up. However, if you experience a spinning sensation (rotational vertigo), it is crucial to evaluate the inner ear separately; you can read more in our vertigo and dizziness in Guadalajara section.

Simple Snoring vs. Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Learn to differentiate common nighttime noise from a serious respiratory condition:

volume_down

Simple Snoring (Common)

Noise produced by the passive vibration of the throat's soft tissues as air passes through. It does not interrupt breathing or fragment sleep.

  • Constant intensity or soft, intermittent sound
  • No breathing pauses or silent episodes
  • The patient wakes up feeling rested and energetic
  • No immediate cardiovascular risks

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Occurs when throat muscles relax so much that the airway physically collapses, stopping air flow for several seconds and causing drops in blood oxygen levels.

  • Very loud snoring interrupted by silent pauses
  • Breathing pauses or choking gasps while sleeping
  • Fragmented sleep, daytime fatigue, and headaches
  • Increases risk of hypertension, heart attacks, and diabetes
